Film : 5 Just Announced Remakes!

By News Editor | March 5, 2010

honeyishrunk‘Tis the season for remaking for some of our favourite ’80s comedies it seems!

Quite a few do-overs have been announced over the last 24-Hours. Here’s a look at five of them :

Gilligan’s Island
A feature film version of Sherwood Schwartz’s incessantly popular sitcom is sailing towards the screen. Warner Bros and Atlas Entertainment have teamed with the prolific Chuck Roven (The Dark Knight) to see that this is one project that’s not deserted.

Our Pick to Star : Michael Cera (as Gilligan), Brian Dennehy (The Skipper)

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids
What’s Playing recently spoke to one of the original crew members on the 1989
picture who confirmed that Disney are covertly developing a remake of the Rick Moranis hit. “It won’t be a sequel to the other films - if only because Mr. Moranis has retired”, we were informed. “Not sure how far it is along, but it is in the works”.

Our pick to star : Ed Helms (The Hangover) as Wayne Szalinski

Police Academy
The producer of the original 1984 comedy, Paul Maslansky, will return to induct a new group of recruits. Though rumours suggest that Steve Guttenberg may be back as series’ fave Officer Mahoney, that’s not been confirmed by the studio. As long as the iconic theme is back, that’s all that matters!

Our Pick to Star : Taylor Kitsch as Mahoney Jr, Seann William Scott as Tackleberry (and, of course, it’d be great to see Steve Guttenberg, Bubba Smith, Bobcat Goldthwait and George Gaynes return from the original films!)

Pet Sematary
Paramount Pictures is developing a second film adaptation of the classic horror novel by Stephen King. Matthew Greenberg, who wrote the feature film version of King’s 1408, has been hired to script the film; Transformers‘ Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing.

Our Pick to Star : Hugo Weaving (as Louis Creed)

Arthur
Jason Winer will direct a remake of the Arthur Moore comedy classic - likely without the Christopher Cross theme song (sadly!). The new version will see Russell Brand (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) slip into the alcoholic-spilt shoes of billionaire ‘boy’, Arthur.

Our Pick to Star : (besides Brand’s Arthur) Christopher Lee as Hobson , Rose Byrne as Linda
